SMP Channel Block Pillow |
1) There's the "channel" block pillow: it consists of three "strips", of which the two side ones are solid and often filled with some softer material. Only the central strip is composed of blocks, and that's whereyou make your lace; the other two strips are "bobbin rest" areas. If you need to turn a corner, you turn your central block and continue working down the same strip. This pillow can be either flat or permanently angled through the means of a more elaborate base (often drawers in the higher parts. See the Lacemaker's "Swiss"). If I remember a-right (it's been a while since I visited the SMP site -- my electronic skills stretch to e-mail but not much else), that type is considered to be "true" block pillow. |
Square Block pillow |
2) An "allover" block pillow. You'll have either: a "cross" of square blocks (3 down, 3 accross, with the central one shared -- total of 5) with the remaining 4 as "fillers" (often with a "lesser" filling and *fixed in place*. In octagonal pillows, those are triangles, not squares. Easier to work on) or: *all* workable blocks (9). All of these pillows are flat, and you turn *the pillow* (not the block) when you hit the corner. |
