review by Ruth Hickman: The flax museum is great, as they take you from planting to thread and how it was used. It is realinteresting but not for those of us who are allergic to dust and pollens  : ) but had a great time anyway. They have a second part of the Flax museum that is  a wonderful Lace museum. It is in a new building all its own and just fantastic. The first floor is lace and a lot of it. The second floor is set up in life like rooms of different scenes, with lace in use in most of them.

Museums can be found in almost every town called HeemkundeMuseum (old habits and usage of the people) and most of the time you will find some lace and embroidery in them.  People should just go the the Tourist Office and find out.

Museum of Burano :
In the museum you'll find examples of Venetian laces and
Burano Laces. Both are needlelaces but are different in their construction.
The venetian laces are made joining the motifs with bars,
the Burano laces have a net ground entirely made with needle.
In the museum there are, mostly, examples of Venetian lace
("very" wonderful tableclothes !),
but there are wonderful fans and gloves without fingers
made in Burano lace.( information from Tiziana Sammuri, Taranto (ITALY)

lace biennial
There are normally 4 exhibitions: local lace, Italian lace, lace from all over the world, and lace for the competitions.
The 1998 themes were related to Marco Polo and Poetry. This year there was also a fashion exhibition, the patterns of the woven or printed fabrics were inspired by lace patterns.

Sansepolcro is situated in the Arezzo province of Toscana, so the 'normal' way to get there by public transport is Via Florence and Arezzo. Sansepolcro is however the end station on the Umbrian railway from Perugia. It is possible to travel by train from Rome changing at the station Perugia Ponte St. Giovanni.

There is a crossbow competition in Sansepolcro the second Sunday in September each year, the lace biennial is held in connection with that event every second year. The exhibitions last about one month. Next one in 2000.

Setti Mari (Seven Seas): write to Signora Annabella
Doni, at the Albergo Doni, Calle del Vin, 30122 Venezia.  She speaks English,
runs a small hotel ("very clean", she said), and is the organizer and teacher
for the group.  She is interested in making contact with lacemakers anywhere.
They meet on Thursday afternoons and perhaps more near the S. Apostoli Campo.

Museo de Artes y Costumbres Popalares. (museum of folk arts and costumes)-in Sevilla
Includes a lace room with Torchon, Valenciennes, Chantilly, Brussels lace, Duchesse, Blonde,  needle lace and more.

There is another small museum in a town called L'Arboç,
mainly for catalan blonde. It is also located in the northeast region of Spain called Catalonia, like
the other two, in the province of Tarragona. Catalan blonde is still taught at a local school.

Camariñas Lace Museum - located in a fishing village called Camariñas,
in the northwestern region of Spain called Galicia. This place is the
center of a quite active lacemaking area and you can find quite some
shops in the village, more for lace made than for lace tools. Once a
year, around Easter, a lace event is held, lasting 4 or 5 days, where
you can find not only local lace, but foreign lace shops and shows.
Besides, the surroundings are lovely, as the village placed in a wild piece of coast
called "Coast of Death", because of the many shipwrecks
