Knotted lace is know under a variety of names including Dandella, Armenian lace, and Nazareth lace. 
This tiny doily measures Only 5" across at widest point. This was a gift from a friend.
At first lace was made by knotting or weaving with the fingers. 
Once the needle was invented and metal shuttles were  produced,
the progress of lacemaking, embroidering and weaving 
advanced very rapidly.  Armenian lace a series of artfully arranged 
fishermen's knots, or half-hitches which don't unravel like crochet.
