A lace chasuble and stole I made
for a friend, who was about to be priested.
They are based on a design made in fabric by Juliet Hemingway, who made the
Archbishop of Canterbury's enthronement robes.

I finished this set at the start of June 2002, for our youth minister, Jay Angerer, who was being ordained deacon and expects to be ordained Priest in December.

Each cross is different from all the others in terms of stitches used as well as colour combinations, though in the case of some of the smaller ones, this may be a subtle difference eg the number of cable gimps used. I like the effect of cable gimps, as they give the piece some texture. The threads for the whole project are very varied, and seeing how the colours interacted was a great deal of the fun in making it. The basic threads were about the thickness of Coton Perlé 8.

I based the design of the large cross on my two favourite smaller crosses. The centre is worked as "Archway" from Patricia Read and Lucy Kincaid's book "Milanese Lace"; and the outer part is worked in whole stitch with two different coloured workers (one for the orange part & one for the red) and several cable gimps. For those of you who want to know, the cross on the chasuble took about forty-two hours, with about another ten spent mounting it and making the garment. I know this as I was working on them in such a concentrated way, but the crosses for the stole were spread over several months, so I can't really estimate how long that took.
