(1)Abenberg: The Klöppelmuseum Abenberg is now in the Burg (castle). Museum and lace-school Abenberg Lacemaking around Abenberg goes back to the convent Marienberg which was founded in 1482. In a document from july 14th 1640 the prioress of the monustary mentioned for the first time bobbin lace making. For the year 1770 some lace traders are known in this region. Till the beginning of 19th. century they made there bobbin-laces with linnen. Than the so called Leonische industry grew up and the gold- and silver-laces replaced the white ones. And the trade statistic counts in 1833 in Abenberg 240 master in bobbin-lace with about 600 till 700 lacemakeers during winter time. Lots of Leonische Lace went out into the world, some with simple others with very artistic patterns. Most of them for noblemen, churchmen others for theatre, uniforms or folk costumes. So till 1918 this was for a big part of the population their living. Then lace in any sort wasn't any longer intersting and today it is for most of the people there only a hobby. The lace-school was founded in 1913 to keep bobbin lace alive and the people their living. They got some very important decorations. Today tourists and other people can take part in their course just for fun. On the 21st of september 2001 they could open their new museum. It is in the historical barn beside the castle high over the city. Before they had only two rooms in a part of the town hall. And the first museum opening in 1972 were in the rooms of the convent. In 1907 the municipality build a house for this school and everybody up seven years of age could visit this classes. Very quick the pupils were able to make simple straight laces and earn some pennys a day. Times changed so today the classes there, you find them on the web-site, are for hobby-lacers.
