Lacemaking of   Bayeux, France

under construction

LACEMAKERS:
LACE: Traditional Bayeux lace is white, ecru or black, and is notable for delicate and intricate patterns based on 18th-century designs. In the 19th century, some 5,000 artisans centered in Bayeux and neighboring villages were involved in the craft. Only 10 are to be found today, and they are associated with the Atelier du Centre Normand de la Dentelle aux Fuseaux (Norman Bobbin Lace-Making Center), an association devoted to the conservation of the lace-making heritage of Normandy. The center, at 5 Place aux Pommes in the old quarter where many elegant residences are tucked away among the narrow streets, is under the direction of Marie-Helene Salvador, who has won national recognition in France for reviving the craft.
