Princess lace is a tape lace. The tapes are shaped and scalloped, unlike the straight tapes of Battenberg. The name was made up at turn of century to encourage this "craft type" lace. 

Princess lace often imatates the flowers, leaves and swirls found in Duchesse and Mixed Brussels bobbin laces.
