Normandy Lace
This is the Patchwork Quilt of Lace. It is created using many different pieces of lace to create a whole new piece. I makes a lovely way to have samples of many varieties of lace in one. Most Normandy lace is made from old handmade laces that had too much wear in places and were thus resurrected into something new and useful.
It is highly collectable for the old pieces, which are a kind of sampler of lace tecniques.
The piece below includes Binche, Alencon, Flanders, Limerick and Honiton.
Pat Earnshaw's "The Identification of Lace" says (1) Normandy lace is a
general name for the laces of that area of northern France, and (2) also may
refer to 20th C. patchwork laces constructed from white embroideries embedded
in a medley of hand and machine lace fragments.
