Hairpin Lace
also known as Hairpin Crochet or Portuguese Lace

This lace is formed over a u shaped wire frame called a hairpin, with the help of a crochet  hook. It can be made with very fine thread or heavy yarn. Crochet cotton is very common.
The chains or tape is then laid out on a paper pattern and filled in with needle lace techniques much like old fashioned battenburg.
