Often called Dutch cap lace, this handmade bobbin lace is a relative of French Lille. The lace itself usually has two straight sides, and was pleated or ruffled to edge a "Best Day" or Sunday cap. The designs are stylized floral, with short pattern repeats. The technique includes a handmade mesh, made continuously with the pattern (the threads continue from the mesh into the clothwork). Each side of the mesh has two twisted threads. The mesh is decorated with little dots, called point d'esprit. The cloth-like pattern area is surrounded with a silk thread woven into the lace as it is made. This outline is called a gimp. |
